"Remarkably, Rockwell combines this important insight with his more familiar wit and good humor in a straightforwar, harmonious composition.  The technical problems facing Rockwell were formidable indeed:  the source of light had to be central yet unobtrusive; it had to convey the soft, suffused quality that made the light bulb so diferent from gas lighting.  The young paint's solutions were masterful, and revealed the growing maturity of an artist who could extract universal truths from the everyday.
